At GM and later at Nissan, we always did our tape drawings on gridded vellum, stapled to large wooden boards which were counterbalanced on tracks and could be raised up easily (saves the knees and back).
Tape is a great medium, especially for students who may not be able to afford the technology of powerwalls, etc. One can develop the design in quarter scale (or whatever size desired) and the tape is usually done over an engineering layout drawing - with the manikins, engine, other requirements, etc. - so the initial clay model centerline and sections can be relatively accurate to the package.
