To solve LA’s daily traffic congestion BMW Group DesignworksUSA designers have conceived an underwater transportation system that uses the city rivers and vehicles inspired by sea creatures.


Presented by BMW Group DesignworksUSA at the LA Design Challenge 2013, L.A. Subways. is a project inspired by the efficiency of swarms and the unique power generating processes found within cells.

The vehicles are propelled “using bacteria and an electrochemical reaction between saltwater and freshwater to produce hydrogen fuel.”

The fish-inspired submarines, created with the MINI brand in mind, also integrate small robots hidden in the sidepods and capable of cleaning the exterior surfaces from the algae.
