The development of the SP:01 started in 2008, when the Detroit Electric brand was revived by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England.
The main technical highlights are a carbon-fibre bodywork, a mid-mounted 200bhp electric motor coupled with rear-wheel-drive transmission and a lightweight, purpose-designed battery pack.
The main performance figures are a 0-100 km/h (0-62mph) sprint time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph top speed.
The battery pack has a bi-directional charge and discharge feature made possible through a home charging and power back-up unit, named ‘360-POWERBACK’.
The company has also announced its plans for introducing two additional high-performance EV models in 2014, with a production capacity of 2,500 units/year.
The interior will feature an advanced infotainment system with a Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment system – ‘SAMI’, which provides access to everything from the music player, satellite navigation and interior lighting to vehicle systems statuses such as battery level and range to recharge.
SAMI even acts as a remote control via GSM – enabling users to locate the vehicle and operate the climate control system.
