The first part of the exclusive report on the Swansea Metropolitan University Summer 2012 Graduate Show, with the final projects developed by the automotive design students of the South Wales-based University.

SMU Degree Show 2012On last June, graduates students from Swansea Metropolitan University (South Wales coast, UK), have exhibited their final year Automotive and Transport Design projects at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea Marina, UK.

About SMU’s Automotive and Transportation Design Courses

The School of Industrial Design (Product & Automotive Design) at the Swansea Metropolitan University offers a BA (Hons) Automotive Design undergraduate programme and a MA Transportation Design postgraduate programme – plus  industrial and product design-focused courses.

“Students are encouraged to undertake projects which will help them target their career aspirations. Major projects are mentored by course director Paul Morrow and Sergio Fontanarosa.

“Paul’s bias is towards the more context/research driven conceptual vehicles. With post graduate education and employability in advanced studios and alternative transport industries being the aim.

“Sergio’s bias being towards the vehicle branded cars & motorcycles projects. With sensitivity to automotive brands and skills development, for employability in design and surface development being the aim.

“Some projects are a mix of both philosophies as all students are exposed to both members of staff and the input of various product design lecturers.”

The goal of the EB-X project was to develop the ultimate hyper saloon, capable of communicating the core values of the Bugatti Brand through a refined balance of forms, supported by a deep sense of harmony, elegance and sophistication, which result in a very different silhouette, although some classic elements have been retained.

Carrying Ettore Bugatti’s initials, the concept picks up on the torpedo-like character; the typical Bugatti radiator grill and a subtle spine running the centre length of the car are synonymous to the brand identity.

The hotrod is powered by a gas turbine engine and also mixes old school trends with modern and futuristic design to make a statement. The design has taken influences from sea creatures and fabric; from the way it hangs naturally to create an organic, free falling design.

The main purpose of the design is to capture the essence of a hotrod and the personality of Jay Leno, while keeping it organic and natural, yet most importantly keeping it fun and full of enjoyment.

The Zargonic Concept is an answer to the diminishing will to own brash, “vulgar” sports cars and the emerging markets in the BRIC and UAE nations, which “alleviates the inception of niche vehicle archetypes.”

The design builds on the monolithic design language of earlier Aston Martins, whilst retaining purity of form and an unmistakable ‘Down the Road Graphic’.

“Through sentimental attachment, objects amass character and value beyond material. The intangible, emotional connection with the vehicle created through interaction delays disposal, encourages a repair culture and creates a new dimension to ownership.”

Schneider Trophy 2327 by Robert J Crick

In the glory days of civil aviation, when flying was an art and pilots were heroes, the Schneider Trophy was the pinnacle of aeronautical sport. Victory granted bragging rights to the winning nation.

The intense competition meant winning could only be achieved by those willing to push technology to its absolute limits. In the 11 events that took place between 1913 and 1931 aircraft evolved from crude 70kmh flying machines to 700 km/h precision masterpieces. The race paved the way for some of the greatest technological achievements of the 20th century.

382 years after the last Schneider air race, the legendary contest returned to the skies. The speed and danger rapidly earned the series a fearsome reputation and crowds grew exponentially.

In 2325, technology tycoon, Jason Callisto, revived the Supermarine brand with the intention of dominating the world’s most prestigious race.
