The Five Minute Car Design by Road & Track

Road & Track magazine has launched a video series titled “The Five Minute Car Design”, where professional designers create a car sketch – and then destroy it. The first two episodes feature Ian Cartabiano and Tom Matano.

In the first episode, published on 18 July 2012, Ian Cartabiano, Studio Chief Designer at Calty Design Research and one of the designers of the LF-LC Concept, sketches a mid-engined compact sportscar.

In the video he speaks about the main characterizing design elements of a sportscar. He also underlines the importance of hand sketching, and shows how he uses markers to quickly indicate shapes and reflections.

In the second episode, Tom Matano – designer of the iconic Mazda Miata/MX-5 and 3rd generation RX-7 (FD) – creates an unconventional, aerodynamic sedan, introducing original elements such as a vertical windshield, a doube bubble roof and a front bench seat.

Matano is currently executive director of the School of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
