Volvo Design Director reinterprets the P1800

Volvo Design Director Chris Benjamin has created two sketches that reinterpret the iconic P1800 model with the brand’s current design language.

The sketches were presented yesterday during the #SwedeSpeak Twitter Chat, where Chris Benjamin – Design Director at Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC) – has answered the questions asked by participants regarding the design of the company’s models.

These fun sketches showcase a possible reinterpretation of the historical P1800 model, that this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

1961 Volvo P1800Produced from 1961 to 1973 in 47,000 units, the Volvo P1800 was a 2-door coupé sportscar powered by a 1.8 liter engine and – from 1969 – a 2.0 liter engine.

The last model, the 1800ES introduced in 1972, was a three-door shooting-brake and its final design was chosen after two prototypes built by Sergio Coggiola and Pietro Frua.

Among the iconic design elements was the all-glass rear tailgate of the 1800ES, which inspired many Volvo designers and was later adopted on the 480 and on the current C30 model.
