At the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show Volkswagen has unveiled the Cross Coupé, a concept car that anticipates the design of the next generation SUV models.

Volkswagen Cross Coupe ConceptThe Volkswagen Cross Coupé Concept is defined as a crossover between a four-door coupé and a compact SUV.

According to the German carmaker, it represents an evolution of the brand’s design DNA and previews a series of upcoming production models.

In terms of general dimensions, with a length of 4,345 mm, a width of 1,868 mm and a height of 1,523 mm, the Cross Coupé is positioned between the Golf and the Tiguan.

Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept The Cross Coupé is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain with AWD, featuring two electric motors – one at the front and one at the rear – and a 110 kW direct injection turbocharged gasoline engine (TSI), for an overall outpu of 195 kW.

Given the general layout of the drive system, with the rear electric motor driving the rear axle, the 9.8 kWh lithium ion battery is positioned in the center tunnel.

The main performances are a 0-100 km/h sprint in 7 seconds and an average fuel efficiency of 2.7 l/100 km. The range in pure electric mode is 45 km.

Exterior Design

Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept The exterior design of the Cross Coupé is quite distinctive. The main proportions are defined by the long wheelbase, short overhangs, the shallow belt line, long hood, sloped rear window and a pushed-back passenger compartment.

These, along with the the muscular shoulders and thick C-Pillar contribute to the overall dynamic stance.

The main graphic elements of the car are the new grille at the front and the strongly defined, arched belt line running just below the frameless windows from the hood to the tail lights.

The off-road capabilities and high ground clearance are underlined by the muscular, dark wheel-arches and the 20-inch wheels.

At the rear, the Cross Coupé has a hatchback look, and the general graphic layout of the shows some reminiscences of the Alfa Romeo Brera coupé.

The front end design features a new grille, where two chromed horizontal chrome-plated fins connect the xenon twin headlamps, and a third one serves as a bottom edge, visually enhancing the car’s width.

Also, the lower of the two chrome fins contains the daytime running light, and the fin above it contains the direction indicators.

Interior Design

The four-seat cabin feature a design sportier than conventional SUVs. The dashboard is raised up like in an SUV, but features coupé-inspired lines.

The dashboard integrates a user-programmable instrument cluster display and a center-positioned touch screen display.

The whole interior combines a sense of robustness with refined quality. The individual bucket seats were designed for comfort and have solidly integrated headrests.
