Compared to the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro on which the R8 GT Spyder is based, the total weight was reduced by 85 kg for a total of 1,640 kg.
This result was made possible by the extensive use of lightweight materials and by trimming the equipment down to the essentials.
In addition to the Audi Space Frame (ASF) body, the new features are the magnesium engine frame, the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) soft-top cover, the rear side panels, the modified front spoiler, the fixed rear spoiler and the new rear bumper.
The tuned version of the 5.2 liter V10 FSI engine delivers 540 Nm (398.28 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm, and a power output of 412 kW (560 hp).
The main performances of the R8 GT Spyder are a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 317 km/h.
The exterior design is characterized by a number of visual modifications, including add-on parts in contrasting titanium gray, a front splitter with a dual lip, flics at the sides of the front bumper, red GT badges, round exhaust tailpipes, an enlarged diffuser and dark LED tail lights in a clear-glass design.
A windshield frame in matt CFRP is offered as an option.
The electro-hydraulically powered fabric soft top can open or close in 19 seconds, and can be operated at speeds up to 50 km/h.
In the interior, the bucket seats have a chassis made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP), which alone saved 31.5 kg of weight.
