The Grande Punto looks well proportioned: with a wheelbase of 2,510 mm and a total length of 4,030 mm it is the largest vehicle in the B-Segment: this gives great benefits in terms of interior roominess and also in terms of the exterior line of the car, since it is not limited by city-car dimensions.
The front end features clean lines, but at the same time it has a distinct personality. In the 3/4 front view the Grande Punto can be easily recognized as a Giugiaro's work: the shape of the headlights is very similar to that of Maserati 3200 GT, another creation by Italdesign.
The side of the Grande Punto puts into evidence the coupé-like silhouette, with a very smooth transition between the bonnet and the windshield. The formal language uses modern styling cues like the strong waist line and the emphasized wheel arches, with reminescences of the Fiat Stilo and the Ford Focus. The rear mirror is anchored directly on the door panel, like on many sportcars, and is really more beautiful than that of the current model.
The rear headlights are mounted on the rear pillars, like on all the previous Punto models. They have an original shape, even if less original than that of the previous model. Anyway the beautiful diamond-like light of the 1999 version was ruined by the additional lights on the backdoor, so we can see an improvement even under this aspect.
In conclusion the new Grande Punto can be considered a design success, with a fine mix of smooth curves and sharp edges and all the qualities a World-Car should have.
The only doubt is about the name: we hope Fiat will not use the 'Grande' adjective (i.e. "big" in italian): the new Punto can demonstrate how great it is even without it...
