The Volvo 'Extreme Gravity Car' was designed and produced at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Centre in California for an annual downhill car race for charity – The Extreme Gravity Competition – which attracts strong competition from rival automotive designers.

The 5th Edition of the "Extreme Gravity Racing Series" was held on August 18th at Jack's Peak Drive (Monterey, California).

Volvo's aerodynamic and stylish design achieved a top speed of 54mph and beat entries from Audi, Bentley and Chrysler to win the Grand Prize for being the fastest car, after winning the Grand Prize for design in 2004.

The Volvo Extreme Gravity Car was designed with a focus on modern Scandinavian styling and, of course, safety, which included a five-point harness, full rollover cage and an effective braking system.

"Achieving top speed in a vehicle without an engine is a remarkable integration of design and engineering," said Lars Erik Lundin, vice president and general manager of the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Centre.

The Extreme Gravity Competition raises money for foster children, as well as providing work experience to help them to become independent members of the local community.
