On the occasion of the "World Natural Gas and Hydrogen Vehicle Exhibition" held in Bolzano (Italy) on 8-12 June 2005, the C.R.M.T. of Lyons (Thermal Machine Research Centre), Zagato Style Centre and Berman light bodywork presented a concrete solution for mobility, pollution and congestion in large cities: the V.O.L.P.E. project (FOX in English), acronym of Veicolo Originale Leggero Privo Emissioni (Original Zero-emission Light Vehicle).
The dimensions of the Volpe are comparable to those of a motorcycle: its length, width and height are respectively 200, 100 and 150 cm. The Volpe can carry two passengers thanks to the seats in line, and the maximum speed is 65 km/h.
It features an automatic electrical generator (located inside the front of the vehicle) powerd by natural gas (CH4) and two electrical engines (0.29-2.0 KW) located in the rear wheels. The extimated cost per 100 Km is only 2.5 Euro, and there is no autonomy limit when using natural gas (CH4).
The battery can also be charged using the standard electrical network(AC 220V).
The Volpe requires a driver license available at age of 14 (lower power versions only).
About the "2005 World Natural Gas and Hydrogen Vehicle Exhibition"
For the first time in Italy ENGVA (European Natural Gas Vehicle Association) presented the World Natural Gas and Hydrogen Vehicle Exhibition, under the aegis of the autonomous province of Bolzano.
The Provincial Council of Bolzano has taken concrete steps to promote the use of cleaner fuels: natural gas in the short to medium term and hydrogen in the long term.
Changes in regulations for setting up fuel stations, the creation of an extensive network of natural gas stations and incentives to encourage use of this safe, clean fuel in both the private and public sector are steps that have already been taken. This is why Bolzano was chosen as the venue for this World Exhibition.
The United Nations’ Kyoto Protocol, which identified urban motor vehicle traffic as one of the major causes of atmospheric pollution, represents a challenge for all motor vehicle manufacturers to develop vehicles that reduce their environmental impact to the minimum.
The most prestigious Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, Research Centres and Technology Producers presented new natural gas vehicles and all the extraordinary opportunities this fuel can offer in the transport field as regards both the environment and mankind.
The main aim of this event is to make the public aware of the importance of using Natural Gas (CH4), an immediate, concrete solution already available: the first indispensable step while awaiting hydrogen.
During the Exhibition visitors had a chance to learn about efforts to date in seminars on natural gas and hydrogen held by research centres, sector operators and scientists. Jeremy Rifkin were also present to explain the benefits of using hydrogen for transport purposes. |
