NASA/Lockheed Martin Supersonic Design Concept

NASA has presented an illustration of a futuristic aircraft design concept for supersonic cruise flight, currently investigated by Lockheed Martin Corporation. A similar advanced vehicle could enter service in the 2030-2035 timeframe.

Published by NASA in the Image of the Day series, the illustration shows an advanced aircraft designed for supersonic flight over land.

The project is currently being developed by the Lockheed Martin Corporation, where engineers are trying to achieve supersonic overland flight by lowering the level of sonic booms through the use of an "inverted-V" engine-under wing configuration. Such an advanced aircraft could enter service in the 2030-2035 timeframe.

This concept was presented in April 2010 to the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.
