Debuting at the 2007 SEMA Show, the Pontiac Solstice SD-290 race concept was designed "to evoke the emotions of classic sports cars", capturing the design of vintage racecars in a modern "barchetta" style.
The car is characterized by a passenger cockpit tonneau cover and a driver windscreen.
The exterior design features a new front fascia, grille inserts, hood with heat extracting grilles and front fenders. This transformation has contributed to improve the car aerodynamics.
Extensive weight savings were achieved thanks to the removal of the windshield, side glass, window regulator, convertible top, climate system and windshield wiper system.

The Pontiac Solstice SD-290 race concept is powered by a 2.0 liters turbocharged unit with direct-injection, which delivers 290 hp and is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission.
The racing-styled interior is characterized by the removable steering wheel and the bucket seat with four-point safety belt. Additional safety equipment includes a roll-bar and the on-board chrome fire extinguisher.
Among the technical highlights are the forged 19-inch wheels with Hoosier R6 racing tires, coil-over suspension system supplied by KW Automotive, the braking system with three-piston aluminum calipers and 13-inch rotors provided by Stainless Steel Brake Company and the cat-back exhaust system with center-mounted outlet by Solo Performance.
