The M-80 is a 2-seat convertible with integrated roll-bar structure, powered by a 350-hp hybrid gas-electric mid-engine coupled with rear-wheel drive and Constant Variable Transmission (CVT).
The name M80 stands for "Mid-engine, 80 inches wide."
The space frame structure is made mostly of aluminum alloys, and is assembled using different processes: epoxy bonding, riveting, and welding.
The exterior body is made of composite materials.
Estimated performance figures are a 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.9 seconds and a 0-1/4 mile in 1.9 seconds, while the top speed is 150 mph.
Thanks to a total weight of 2,200 pounds the M80 has an average fuel consumption of 46 mpg.
The interior features exclusive materials and trims, including leathers and aluminum, and the fine carpeting are found throughout.
The projectis currently under development, and a physical prototype is scheduled to debut within the next 12 months.
The design of the M80 was developed by founder Joe Palumbo, who took inpiration from the simplicity and feeling of 1950's and 1960's sportscars.
The M-80 is designed as a convertible car with an integrated roll-bar structure. Special attention was paid to the driver's visibility and to aerodynamics which benefits from a 0.30 mdrag coefficient and a full ground effect with enclosed underfloor and front/rear diffusers.
As Joe Palumbo explains, "The M-80 is an exotic design, with what I call a few conservative lines. This element allows the design to be “timeless.”
"For this reason I decided that a big wing in the back would not look right. That’s not in style anymore. I also wanted to stay away from gull wing doors. The gull wing doors are nice to look at and are great for shows, but they are a bear to live with on a daily basis.
"The driving feeling of the car is designed to be in the spirit of Lotus, but with a longer wheelbase for more comfort while driving on the road."
More comments by Joe Palumbo about his design choices and modern design trends can be read in "Design Talk", a page from Palumbo's official website.
The digital design process of the M80 was carried out with Autodesk's products, choosen by Palumbo for their previous experience with AutoCAD.
The chassis was developed by Jason Palumbo with Autodesk Inventor, while Joe Palumbo worked on the exterior design with Autodesk AliasStudio.
Comments about the digital development process are reported by VFXWorld's article "Fast-tracking Auto Design in 3D", which also includes a 360-view of the M-80 concept.
