Audi ha unveiled the new generation of the TT Roadster. The soft top incorporates a heated glass rear window and can be opened in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 30mph.

From the official Press Release:

Exterior design

Audi TT RoadsterWith its rigorous geometry and clarity, the design of the first TT Roadster elevated it to the status of a cult classic. Audi has preserved the charismatic design idiom and carefully honed it for the new model.

Whereas the tail end and the roof section seem to flow into one another at the rear of the TT Coupé, the soft top of the TT Roadster forms a clear contrast that gives the overall design a more geometric look.

The body’s lines brim with power and forward thrust. This impression is underscored by the athletic curves of the vehicle’s flanks just as much as by the rising dynamic line above the sill area and the taut, muscular shoulder line.

The eye-catching fuel filler cap positioned above the rear right wheel sports a classic aluminium design.

Audi TT RoadsterThe face of the new Audi TT Roadster has an expressive feel. Wing-shaped plastic elements are embedded into the slanted, sharply tapered headlights to emphasise the three-dimensional depth of the lamp units.

At the rear of the car, it is the large tailpipes and the wide diffuser which stand out. The tube-shaped reflectors seem to hover inside the tail light units.

As on the Coupé, an electrically powered spoiler rises up out of the boot lid when the speed reaches 120 km/h.

Compared to the model it replaces the new TT Roadster has undergone a growth spurt, with the new proportions accentuating its sporty nature. Length is now 4,178 millimetres (+ 137 mm), width 1,842 mm (+ 78 mm) and height 1,358 mm (+ 8 mm), while the wheelbase has been extended by 46 to 2468 mm.

Despite the extra size, however, the drag coefficient of the 2.0 TFSI is just 0.32 with the soft top up.

Like its coupé counterpart, the new TT Roadster is based on an advanced hybrid Audi Space Frame (ASF) body shell blending 58 per cent aluminium and 42 per cent steel to minimise weight (1,295kg unladen) and increase and body rigidity (+100%).

The soft top

Incorporating a heated glass rear window, the soft top opens or closes in just 12 seconds, and can now be operated at speeds of up to 30mph. It stows even more neatly and space efficiently than before thanks to a new Z-fold system which stacks the rigid front section of the roof on top of the cloth to form a cover, ensuring that the hood sits completely flush with the body and eliminating the need for a tonneau.

Operation is now also completely ‘hands-free’, with no need to attach or detach the hood to or from the windscreen rail.  A powered mesh wind deflector is fitted as standard to streamline airflow through the cabin and minimise buffeting.

Technical features

Audi TT Roadster interiorThe new TT Roadster will be powered by either the 2.0-litre Turbo FSI petrol engine with 200 hp (with front wheel drive) or the 3.2-litre V6 petrol unit with 250 hp (with quattro four-wheel-drive system).

Six-speed manual transmission is a standard feature of both versions, with the S tronic twin-clutch automatic transmission (formerly known as DSG) available as an option.

As an option a magnetic ride system is available: the dampers are filled with a magnetorheological fluid containing minute magnetic particles that can be influenced by an electromagnetic field. By applying a voltage to the system’s electromagnets, the viscosity of the fluid is altered by the affected magnetic particles, increasing resistance to damper movement to iron out pitch and roll when necessary, and reducing resistance when ride comfort takes precedence.

Stability at speed is also enhanced by an electrically powered rear spoiler which helps to increase down force on the rear of the TT Roadster, and retracts to sit flush with the body when not required.

Standard equipment includes powered roof and wind deflector operation, sports seats with leather and Alcantara mix upholstery for 2.0 TFSI versions or full leather for the V6, electronic climate control, a RS 4-style flat-bottomed leather-rimmed steering wheel and a Driver’s Information System (DIS).

Alloy wheels are 17-inch Trapez design in the 2.0 TFSI or 18-inch 10-spoke design in the V6.

In addition to full leather upholstery, V6 versions add front seat heating, an enhanced braking system, an exterior light styling pack and quattro four-wheel-drive.
