Milan-based Domus Academy has released official information about its 2007 Master in Car Design and Mobility. The course lasts one year and is open to international graduates, undergraduates, young designers and professionals. Application requests must be submitted within 30 November 2006.

The Master in Car Design and Mobility is founded on the concept "Design as research of sense of the individual in the world". This approach acquires special importance in the field of Car Design: the Master course suggests some keywords (environment, safety, interaction) helping to find a sense that is probably missing today.

The Master Course addresses graduates and undergraduates from specialised schools, as well as young designers and professionals working in the design field, preferably not younger than 25.

Master Programme and Schedule

Master in Car Design and MobilityThe course lasts one year, from January to December, with a break in the month of August. It consists of two semesters, the first from January to July and the second from September to December. The second semester closes with the Master's projects dissertation and the exhibition.

Classes are in session from Monday to Friday from 9.30 to 13.00, and from 14.00 to 17.00. Attendance is compulsory. Simultaneous translation into English is available during the first months of the course. Foreign students can attend an Italian course held at the school.

The activity is articulated into lectures, seminars, workshops and a final master thesis:

  • January - February: introductive lectures dedicated to Design culture.
  • February - July: 5 or 6 workshops facing key themes in the field of Transportation Design.
  • July: presentation of the themes for the final Master thesis.
  • September - December: development of the Master thesis articulated into lectures, project reviews, theme seminars with companies, technical visits.
  • December: final master projects dissertation and final exhibition.

Master in Car Design and Mobility - Design sketchTheoretical notions (cultural, methodological, technical) are transferred to the students during workshops with specific themes.

Philosophy

The Master in Car Design and Mobility is based on the principle of "learning by designing".

"In order to Design it is not important what the theory describes as possible (because it has already been done, or because it is statistically probable): the designer is interested in the potentials, those possibilities the theory does not consider.

"What is interesting is the method with which to direct the existing know-how towards an innovative view."

Master in Car Design and Mobility - PrototypeThe scenario is changing: the problems related to mobility - traffic, pollution, safety... - can't be considered outside the world of car Design.

The system of individual transportation is more and more under accusation and collective transportation inadequate.

The perception of the car as object of desire representing a lifestyle, a concentration of performance and beauty is naive: it is important to know this approach, since the market is still relying on it, but this can't be considered to be the direction for the future.

Transportation and car Design, the way Domus Academy intends it, is a tool to Design a better relationship (sustainable, safe, interactive) between mobility and territory.
