The Germany-based Loremo has released the first information about its LS concept: an unique 2+2 coupé based on a "design for essential" philosophy: by removing all the "useless" accessories, the total mass of the car was kept under 450 kg. The streamlined body has an excellent Cw value of 0.2 and a minimal frontal area.
Given the lightness, a 20hp turbodiesel unit is enough for the Loremo LS to reach 120 km/h with a fuel consumption of 1,5 l/100 km.
Loremo will unveil this concept at the Geneva Motor Show, in two versions: the Loremo LS and the sporty GT, that with a 50hp engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h, for an average fuel consumption of 2,7 l/100 km.
According to Loremo, if these concepts were produced, they could cost under 11,000 Euro (Loremo LS) and under 15,000 Euros (Loremo GT).
One of the most original features is the absence of conventional doors. A front door opens taking the steering wheel with it, so passengers can enter the cabin by getting into the car by a lateral threshold. "It's as easy as stepping into a bathtub." Loremo claims.
From our point of view, the Loremo LS has a fascinating appeal: the typical beauty of the designed-for-function products: it doesn't have to appeal everybody, because it is designed to work.
Interiors, as one might expects, also focus on the essential needs: seats are designed as simple plastic buckets with upholstery and covers. The lower part of the seat buckets are adjustable in tilt. The pedals and the steering wheel are adjusted to the driver. The rear seats are installed against the line of travel. The dashboard is replaced by a simple instrument mushroom-shaped with a display.
Luggage can be stored in the small trunk located in front of the dashboard or on the rear seats.
The roof and the doors are laid out as a two-layer plastic construction with a laminated interior side. The structure is a patented linear cell steel frame with three straight longitudinal girders and one central transverse girder and weighs just 95 kg. The steel girders provide stability and safety and allow for a 600 mm crumple zone that reduces passenger load in case of accident.
"The differential link axle connects the advantages of a semi-trailing link and a longitudinal link and this way allows excellent road performance also under different load conditions.
While going straight ahead and contracting both tires, the patented chassis shows a neutral toe and camber behaviour. When driving curves, however, the tire tilts inward (negative camber change) and this way creates an improved lateral road holding.
Also the distribution of weight (50:50), the low centre of gravity as well as its stiff structure contribute to optimum road behaviour. With a width of 105 mm, the low profile tires of the LS (105/70 - R14) have the same road holding as the 200 mm tires of heavy passenger cars.
Three solid longitudinal support bars have a low weight and a higher stiffness than would be the case if there were side doors in the middle. Even in the case of a side impact, they will provide excellent protection. The pyramidal transverse support bar does not only effectively increase the protection against side impact but also makes the structure torsionally stiff to a high extent."
Loremo will whet your appetite for driving, no matter whether in the Loremo LS version with a consumption of 1.5 litres or in the GT version with a maximum speed of 220 km/h.
Loremo's linear cell structure meets all static requirements to crash safety and driving dynamics.
According to Loremo, the graphics show a 50 km/h collision with a static barrier having a 40% overlap. The dashboard is deformed by approximately 150 mm only.
As a side note, the only drawback for this kind of ultra-light vehicles is the crash behaviour in case of impact with heavy vehicles.
